Is a Third to One Half of Your Home Unfinished Business?

Written by Admin | Sep. 20, 2016

That unfinished business is right there: space you already have, probably 1/2 to 1/3 of your home, in fact!

If you would love to squeeze more living space out of your home, you might want to take a look at that unfinished basement.

Your basement can give you so much more than dusty storage. Remodeling your basement can give you plenty of storage space plus new living space the whole family can enjoy.

A finished basement is usually the lowest cost way to add living space to your home, and is certainly less expensive than building an addition.

For success, though, your finished basement project must start with good planning to avoid two key problems.

First, you may have an issue with dampness. You’ll want to do what’s necessary to make sure there are no leaks or risk of flooding, and get rid of any musty smell.

Second, typical basement remodeling challenges like low ceilings, small windows and poor natural lighting require good design to create a much brighter space. We can help you address these concerns right from the start.

Once we’ve solved any problems, you can explore the possibilities!

Start with how you’d like your space to function. If storage is desired, be specific about what you want to store. For example, the right solution for built-in storage for frequently used items will be much different than creating storage for holiday decorations that only need to be accessed once a year.

Also be specific about the family activities you have in mind for the space. A media room, for example, will have a different layout, design, lighting and wiring than a basement gym/spa room. If you want to add a bathroom or kitchenette in a below-grade basement, special plumbing may be required to pump wastewater up and out.

What can your finished basement become? Here are three interesting ideas:

Organized Playtime. Yes, organized! Not just an open space surrounded by a jumble of toys! Imagine a brightly lit area with floor-to-ceiling storage, an art center with sink, a mini-stage, and perhaps a chalkboard wall.

Party Place. Entertaining is so much more fun – and easy – with a basement remodel that includes party-friendly features such as a wet bar, flat screen TV or an island that serves as well for book club buffets and Super Bowl spreads as it does for games at the kids’ sleepovers.

Hobby Central. Let built-ins provide a place to store everything – just like something out of Pinterest! Picture those beautiful shelves and cubbies for craft supplies, and roomy spaces for a big sewing project. The basement can be the perfect place for a wine cellar, a computer desk with room for 3 monitors, glass-front cabinets for a trophy (or Redskins memorabilia) collection, or a closet just right for storing golf clubs, photography equipment or fishing gear.

Remember, with good remodeling, your finished basement can provide storage and a place for family fun. If you’re wondering how your own basement can be all that, give us a call. We’d be delighted to take a look at the space and share some ideas.
