A perfect fit for the homeowners and their young children, this finished walkout basement in Arlington, Virginia features a flexible open floor plan, surrounded by storage cabinets and counters. To keep the basement open, wood encased steel support posts and a support beam was used instead of a load-bearing wall. This basement remodel also created a hideaway laundry room, half bath, and a fun, playhouse under the stairs for the children. The basement is well lit using a combination of recessed, energy saving LED overhead lighting and natural light from an above-grade window and door to the backyard with a window that we cut into the existing wood door, as well as , added the electric doggy door below.
A custom made floating shelf was used as the countertop in the half bath to make the space feel more open in the tight space.
The existing stairs that weren’t code compliant were rebuilt to be within code and given an updated look of oak treads with painted white risers.
The HVAC trunk line was moved from the center of the room to the front wall to allow for additional head height and so a TV viewing area could be created. The furnace was also repositioned to create space for the washer and dryer area, along with a small laundry sink tucked by the washing machine.
